England's Meghan MacLaren let her clubs do the talking to lie just a shot off the lead after the first round of the inaugural Jordan Mixed Open.

MacLaren carded an opening seven-under-par 65 at Ayla Golf Club, a score only bettered by Challenge Tour player Daan Huizing in the unique event which features 40 players each from the Ladies European Tour, Challenge Tour and Staysure Tour.

Players are tackling the Greg Norman-designed course from different tees depending on the tour they compete on - the men of the Challenge Tour covering 7,100 yards, the seniors from the Staysure Tour 6,601 yards and LET players 6,139 yards.

MacLaren has previously spoken out eloquently about the disparity in prize money between the men's and women's games and described this event as a "fantastic opportunity" to showcase the talent in the women's game.

"Given everything I've talked about over the last few months it is nice to back it up, but I didn't want to put any extra pressure on myself," said the 24-year-old, who was watched by her father David, head of the Staysure Tour.

"I've been saying to everybody that the girls' standard of play will show if the course is set up properly. I'm just happy with how I've played and if that puts me near the top against the guys, then that's just a bonus, really."

Cormac Sharvin

The leaderboard featured a mixture of players from each tour, with Challenge Tour player Jack Senior matching MacLaren's 65 and former Ryder Cup players Barry Lane and Miguel Angel Martin among those shooting 67.

Down man Cormac Sharvin is on four under (68), in a seven-strong group that includes Stacy Lee Bregman and Camilla Lennarth.

Scott Henry is one under, two shots ahead of his wife Kylie.

Michael Hoey shot 69 but Robin Dawson (75) and Brendan McGovern (a ten-over par 82) had days to forget.
