Ireland fall away on final day to finish 11th

Ireland came into the final day of the World Amateur Team Championship at Carton House with an outside chance of a bronze medal as they were lying in fourth place after three rounds but with 9 shots to make up, they required a fast start and it didn’t happen.

As Ireland pressed early for the birdies they needed to put pressure on a medal position, so the frustration grew as they failed to make inroads and their challenge stalled.

Other countries looking to secure a podium finish though had no such problems and so Ireland tumbled from 4th place back to finish in 11th position.

Annabel Wilson led Ireland’s final day scoring with a one under par 72 while Olivia Mehaffey shot a 74 and Ireland finished the championship on four under - a long way behind the 29 under par runaway ten-shot winning total of the United States for whom World No 1 Jennifer Kupcho finished tied second on the individual leaderboard on 15 under .

Korea’s Ayeon Cho ended up leading the individual scoring on 17 under par and helped her country to the bronze medal with Japan claiming the silver
