Rory McIlroy says he is confident that he will rectify some technical issues with his swing as he prepares for this week's US PGA Championship at Bellerive Country Club.
The 29-year-old has put himself into contention on a number of occasions this year, but has failed to take advantage of those opportunities.
The latest was a closing 73 at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational in Akron on Sunday as he chased down winner Justin Thomas, and follows on from the Hollywood-native settling for a tie for second at the Open in Carnosutie after enjoying a late share of the lead.
Indeed he has failed to win from the final group four times this year.
McIlroy’s putting has often been the main focus of attention, but he told RTÉ Sport that it is technique off the tee which has been letting him down of late.
"Some of my driving let me down badly on Sunday," he said.
"I drove the ball. I only hit three fairways on Sunday and felt like I was playing out of the trees all day so it was hard to get it close enough where I could make birdies or even get it on the green.
"It was disappointing, but there is enough good stuff in there to come in here with some encouragement.
"As long as I can get my game and ball into shape, it could be a good week"
"I’m trying to work a few kinks out of my swing. There’s a reason I was missing the ball both ways on Sunday with the driver. That obviously comes out more when you are under pressure.
"I spent a bit of time on the range yesterday. This seems like a golf course that is right there in front of you.
"As long as I can get my game and ball into shape, it could be a good week."
