A third round 67 saw Rory McIlroy maintain his three shot gap to the top of the leaderboard as he sits in joint-second at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational in Akron heading into Sunday.

Justin Thomas was one of three joint-leaders after round two, but the American is now out in front on 14-under par after Ian Poulter, tied for second with McIlroy, and Tommy Fleetwood (eight-under par), both lost ground.

McIlroy picked up two birdies on the front nine, and a further one on the 17th without dropping a shot.

Jason Day is a shot further back on 10-under par, with Australian Marc Leishman and American Kyle Stanley tied for fifth on one-under.

Paul Dunne meanwhile slipped to four-over after carding a 75.
