Rickie Fowler's preparations for next week's US Open have been hindered as he battles to make the cut at the FedEx St Jude Classic in Memphis.

However, Waterford's Seamus Power had a good day on Thursday, carding a one under 69 first round to sit five shots off the lead, where shares a piece of tied-29th with Graeme McDowell.

The 28-year-old Fowler is the only player in the world's top 10 competing on the PGA Tour this week after saying there is no better build-up for a major than playing.

But he might be having second thoughts after an opening round 74 left him four over par and in grave danger of not being around during the weekend.

Starting on the 10th, he was undone by two terrible holes during his first nine, double-bogeying the 13th and then triple-bogeying the 15th.

Fowler is 10 shots off the lead, shared by four men on six under.

American trio Matt Every, Scott Brown and Stewart Cink and Colombian Sebastian Munoz all carded 64s, with former Masters champion Charl Schwartzel a shot back on five under.

Meanwhile, Stephanie Meadow has some work to do to make the cut at the Manulife Classic in Ontario.

The 25-year-old bogeyed her final three holes of her opening round to drop to two over par, 10 shots off the lead held by Suzann Petterson of Norway and Korea's Mi Hyang Lee.
