Graeme McDowell well placed at Wyndham as Luke Donald makes Ryder case

Graeme McDowell surged into the top-10 at the Wyndham Championship with a superb round of 64.

The Irishman's six-under-par round featured eight birdies, including each of the last four holes, and elevated him to a tie for sixth place going into the final day.

McDowell's 12-under total leaves him six shots behind 54-hole leader Kim Si-woo, who followed Friday's round of 60 with a 64.

The Korean is four strokes ahead of Spaniard Rafa Cabrera Bello, with Americans Jim Furyk and Kevin Na, and England's Luke Donald one shot further back.

Both McDowell and Donald are too far back to force their way onto the European Ryder Cup team for next month's clash with the US at Hazeltine, but with the duo among several big names vying one of captain Darren Clarke's trio of wild cards, a big result would do the world of good for their hopes.

The normally self-effacing Donald matched McDowell's 64, before offering a Ryder Cup sales pitch to Clarke.

"I think I have the best record in European history as a player," Donald told reporters at Sedgefield Country Club.

"Obviously I'll bring a lot of experience."

Donald has played in four Ryder Cups, on the winning team each time, with a stellar individual record of 10 wins, four losses and one halved match.

But he knows his past history alone is not enough to justify a berth for the biennial event against the US in six weeks, having missed the cut in four of his last six events,

"I need to win probably tomorrow and probably need to have a good chance to win (next week's) Barclays to have a chance (of earning a captain's pick)," said the former world No.1, whose current ranking is 90.

"It's been a slow season for me," he admitted. "It hasn't been consistent but I've been working extremely hard and it's nice to see some form coming into play."

Shane Lowry is another player on the outside looking in when it comes to Clarke's selection, but the Offaly man could only put an even-par 70 on the board to stand on five under.
