European Ryder Cup captain Darren Clarke has withdrawn from next week's US Open at Oakmont.

Clarke, who has not recorded a top-10 finish on the European Tour since winning the Open Championship in 2011, said in a statement: "I'm currently dedicating all of my time to our preparations for the Ryder Cup and unfortunately the US Open is not the place to be when your game isn't 100%.

"I'm very sorry to miss Oakmont but I'm sure it will be a brilliant week. I'll certainly be watching very closely."

The 47-year-old Northern Irishman has missed the cut in the US Open for the last three years.

On Wednesday Tiger Woods announced he won't be at the tournament as he continues his recovery from injury.

The former world number one has not played competitively since finishing joint 10th in the Wyndham Championship in August last year, after which he underwent two back operations in the space of six weeks.

Clarke will be replaced by South Africa's Thomas Aiken, who finished 25th at Chambers Bay last year on debut and was fourth at the recent BMW PGA Championship.

Thailand's Thongchai Jaidee has also withdrawn for personal reasons, with India's Jeev Milkha Singh coming in as first reserve from the Walton Heath qualifier last month.

The 44-year-old, a four-time European Tour winner, will be making his fifth US Open appearance but first since missing the cut at Bethpage Black in 2009.
