Paul Dunne, Gavin Moynihan and Gary Hurley will join the ranks of professional golfers today, just a day after their Walker Cup success.

Dunne is set to play in the Italian Open this week on the European Tour, his first event as a professional.

Five Irish players were part of the Great Britain and Ireland that regained the Walker Cup in record-breaking fashion at Royal Lytham, winning 16.5 to 9.5.

Dunne, who grabbed attention with some brilliant rounds at the Open this year, said: “It was a brilliant way to end my amateur career. I'm going to turn pro on Monday.

“I guess on to a different world now. But it's the same game. This is what I have been waiting for the last two years since the last Walker Cup. It has been an incredible experience.

“The five of us have been coming up together for many years. We have travelled together all the time and that is probably why the five of us have got so good together. I think there is a lot of competition between us but friendly competition.

“The Open is an experience that will stand me in good stead going forward as a pro but this is definitely the best golfing moment I have had in my life.”
