Shane Lowry's brother, his home club and a host of Irish sporting stars were among those paying tribute to the golfer on Twitter after his stunning WGC-Bridgestone Invitational win.

Lowry made a succession of superb shots down the back nine, making birdies and saving par at key moments, to win by two shots from Bubba Watson with a final round of 66.

Irish fans on Twitter were absorbed by the Offaly man's exploits with his brother Alan and club Esker Hills among those leading the tributes when he holed out for birdie on the 18th.

The golfer himself tweeted several hours after his win with a thankyou message for supporters.

Fellow golf professional Darren Clarke also hailed the 28-year-old's achievements.

Kilkenny hurling great Henry Shefflin hailed Lowry's 'class' and 'heart', as did football star Colm Cooper.

Jason Sherlock referenced Lowry's GAA heritage. His father Brendan and uncles Seán and Mick were on the last Offaly team to win the All-Ireland football final in 1982.

Irish rugby star Sean O'Brien and Dublin footballer Bernard Brogan also hailed the win.

RTÉ golf commentator Greg Allen referenced the swashbuckling play that saw Lowry make a series of brilliant saves down the back nine.
