Andres Gonzales claimed a share of the lead in the Barracuda Championship in Nevada by shooting a 21-point second round on Friday.

The 32-year-old from Washington had 11 birdies and a bogey at Montreux Golf and Country Club to join Brendan Steele at the top of the leaderboard in Reno.

In what is the PGA Tour's only Modified Stableford event, Steele scored 18 points with an eagle, seven birdies and a bogey to match Gonzales on 26 points for the competition.

"Today was a lot of fun," Gonzales told pgatour.com on Friday. "I wouldn't have been able to do it without my caddie, Brandon DeStefano.

"He did a lot of number figuring here. Playing at altitude here in Reno, early in the morning it can play a little bit less and then you get to the afternoon and it can play a little bit more.

"I went off what he said and hit a lot of good putts today."

The 2012 winner JJ Henry is two points behind the leaders along with Jonas Blixt of Sweden after enjoying an 11-point second round. Blixt scored 12 points.

Last year's champion Geoff Ogilvy, who finished with a tournament-record 49 points in 2014, missed the cut after making only six points this time around.
