Sergio Garcia and Ernie Els will be part of this year’s Irish Open at Royal County Down, Rory McIlroy has announced.
McIlroy, who was credited as having suggested that the tournament return to the Down course for the first time in 76 years, tweeted that the pair would be part of the field.
McIlroy’s charity, the Rory Foundation is hosting the event, which is already shaping up to have a high-class field.
Els and Garcia join world number one McIlroy, Graeme McDowell, Irish major champions Padraig Harrington and Darren Clarke and 2009 champion Shane Lowry. Lee Westwood and Rickie Fowler are also committed to playing.
The 28-31 May event will be shown live and in HD on RTÉ2 and streamed online via RTÉ Player.
