Brooks Koepka claimed his first PGA Tour title with a one-shot victory at the Waste Management Phoenix Open after long-time tournament leader Martin Laird suffered a nightmare finish.

Koepka carded a five-under-par 66 in his final round to end on 15 under, just clear of his fellow Americans Bubba Watson (65) and Ryan Palmer (66) and Japan's Hideki Matsuyama (67), who all shared second place on 14 under.

Matsuyama had a chance to set up a play-off but he missed a birdie attempt from 17 feet on the last to leave 24-year-old Koepka celebrating his maiden title in a tournament which saw Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson fail to make the cut.

Koepka, who drained a 50-foot putt for an eagle three on the 15th to set up his victory charge, said of his win on Sky Sports: "It feels amazing.

"The last few weeks I've put in a lot of hard work, changing my putting stroke completely and everything seems to be going right. I'm happy to get the win."

While Koepka takes the honours and plaudits, sympathy has to go to Laird.

The Scot, having led by two shots at the halfway stage in Phoenix and by three coming into the final day, was level with Koepka going into the penultimate hole.

However, a bogey on the 17th was followed by a tee shot into the water on 18th - resulting in a double-bogey - as he signed for a 72.

That was the highest final round of any of the top 20 finishers and dropped him back to 12 under overall, level with Spanish amateur Jon Rahm (68).
