Six players are tied for the lead of the OHL Classic following their opening rounds at Playa del Carmen.

Unlike last year, the weather in Mexico did not affect the first day as the leaders entered the clubhouse having carded rounds of 65.

The American sextet heading the field include Will MacKenzie and Robert Garrigus, with Steve Wheatcroft, Hudson Swafford, Tony Finau and Daniel Berger also sitting on six-under par.

Davis Love III, the 1997 PGA Championship winner, is one of 14 players who carded rounds of 66 to sit just off the pacesetters, while last year's winner Harris English is in a group that are two shots behind the leaders along with the highest-placed Mexican in the field, Carlos Ortiz.

The OHL Classic offers a total prize fund of 6.1million US dollars, with almost 1.1million of it to the winner, but none of the world's top 50 players will be battling it out in Playa del Carmen this week.

Former US Open and Masters champion Angel Cabrera is the top-ranked player in the field at 60th but the 45-year-old Argentinian seems out of contention having only managed a round of three-over par.

For Berger, making his sixth PGA Tour start it was a dream opening round.

"This is what we work so hard for, so it's great to get off to a good start, but got to keep it going," he said.

"I think I hit maybe two drivers all day," Berger said. "It's just kind of one of those courses where you've got to hit the fairway. Super tight off the tee, so just put it in play and you've got some birdie opportunities."
