Slieve Russell duo Leona and Lisa Maguire are into the last 16 of the Spanish International Ladies Amateur Championship at Sherry Golf Jerez.

17th qualifier Lisa Maguire beat 16th qualifier Daniele McVeigh, her Ireland team-mate, at the third tie hole (21st) in the first matchplay round of the Spanish Women's Amateur.

Lisa's twin sister Leona defeated Spain’s Mandy Goyos Ball to join her sister in the last 16.

Leona Maguire had earlier fired a level par 72 to qualify in third place. The format sees players compete over two rounds of strokeplay before moving to matchplay for the top 32.

Leona was in fine form finishing just two-over-par for the 36 qualifying holes, four shots behind joint leading qualifiers Ines Lescudier (FRA) and Vicki Troeltsch (GER).

Danielle McVeigh threw caution to the wind after a 79 on the first day and was well rewarded with a one-under par 71.

Unfortunately for the Irish International, the automatic draw sees her play Curtis Cup and International team-mate Lisa Maguire. Lisa added an impressive one-over par 73 to her opening 77.

Ireland’s fourth member of the ILGU’s High Performance squad Gillian O’Leary failed to make the cut after adding a 79 to her opening 80.
