Leona Maguire has scooped The Irish Times/Irish Sports Council Sportswoman of the Month’ award for January following her impressive victory in the Portuguese Ladies Amateur Championship.

The 16-year-old from Slieve Russell in Cavan had 15 strokes to spare over the field in the opening tour event of the season.

The Cavan teenager has continued putting her way to success since 2009 and last year made history as she, and her twin sister Lisa, became the youngest players to represent Great Britain and Ireland at the Curtis Cup in the biennial match against the United States in Massachusetts.
