Golf amateur Danielle McVeigh has been named The Irish Times/Irish Sports Council Sportswoman of the Month for June.
The award comes on the back of her exceptional performance in the Curtis Cup in Massachusetts last month.
The 22-year-old from Co Down has had a memorable golfing year so far, winning the Scottish Stroke Play Championships in April to add to her British and Welsh titles.
Although the United States triumphed at the Curtis Cup last month, McVeigh enhanced her already growing reputation with her performance for the Britain and Ireland team.
Playing just a month after the death of her father Tom, 53, non-playing captain of the team Mary McKenna described McVeigh as a ‘tower of strength’, who offered endless encouragement and leadership to her younger colleagues.
McVeigh finished the competition with two and a half points which included a comprehensive 3 and 2 win in the singles against the US Amateur champion Jennifer Song, who has since turned professional.
This is McVeigh’s first time to win the Sportswoman of the Month award and she will battle it out with other monthly winners in January 2011 to be named Sportswoman of the Year.
