Ireland’s Leona Maguire (Slieve Russell), Lisa Maguire (Slieve Russell) and Danielle McVeigh (Royal Co Down Ladies) have been selected for the Great Britain & Ireland team to compete against the continent of Europe for the Vagliano Trophy in Germany this July.

All three Irish representatives will make their debut in the event, with Ireland's Mary McKenna captaining the side, which takes place at the Hamburg Golf Club from 24-25 July.

The 14-year-old Maguire twins make history as the youngest ever players to be selected for Great Britain & Ireland and they are almost certainly also the first twins to be picked.

Leona is the current Scottish Strokeplay champion, French U-21 champion and last week made history by becoming the youngest player ever to qualify for the matchplay stages of the British Ladies' Amateur Championship and went on to progress as far the quarter-finals of the tournament.

Lisa is the current Irish Ladies' and Girls' Close champion as well as finishing third in the Scottish Open Strokeplay.

McVeigh is the reigning Welsh Open Strokeplay champion, has claimed top five finishes at both the Scottish Open Strokeplay and St Rule Trophy this year and is a former World University Champion (2007).

The biennial matches are played in foursomes and singles format. The team consists of nine players and in 2007, the Continent of Europe beat GB & I 15-9 at Fairmont St Andrews to win the Vagliano Trophy for the first time since 2001.

There was a time when Great Britain & Ireland dominated the Vagliano Trophy matches but since 1995, the Continent of Europe team has won five of the seven encounters and Mary McKenna will be hoping her team will bring the trophy back from Germany.

Mary said 'I am really pleased with my team. A great mix with all four of the Home Countries represented. Although a very young team, there is a remarkable amount of experience as most have successfully competed in events around the world.'

In preparation for the event, the GB & I team will be competing in the AIB Ladies' Irish Open, a Ladies’ European Tour event which will be played at Portmarnock Hotel & Golf Links from 26 to 28 June.
