Ireland and the Metropolitan Golf Association of New York could not be separated as day one of the Carey Cup Matches drew to a close at three matches apiece at the Links Portmarnock.

Ireland, who are bidding to defend the trophy which was retained following a 6-6 draw at the Trump National, Westchester, in 2007, took a narrow lead following the morning foursomes with wins for the Andrew Hogan/Alan Dunbar and Paul Dunne/Dara Lernihan pairings.

MGA's Mike Reardon and Robert Cronheim put a point on the board for the visitors.

The MGA battled back to secure two of the three fourball matches leaving the tie hanging in the balance in advance of tomorrow's six singles matches, the first of which will tee off at 9.30am.
