Irish win home internationals

Ireland's amateur golfers continued their dominance of team competition this season as they swept to victory in the Home Internationals at Muirfield.

Michael Burns' side, who had already beaten Scotland and Wales in their earlier matches, eased to a 10-5 win over defending champions England to secure the Raymond Trophy for the first time since 2003.

The Irish triumph followed hard on the heels of their success in the European Team championship in July while the nation's amateurs have also won the European Senior Team championship and the Boys' Home Internationals in the past few weeks.

Having produced a series of dominant displays in their previous two matches, the Irish went into the final day in purposeful mood and inched nearer overall victory when they won the morning foursomes 3.5-1.5.

Shane Lowry, the world number four, swatted aside Tom Sherreard 4 and 3 in the singles to help Ireland win the afternoon session 6.5-3.5 and put the seal on a comprehensive triumph.

In the day's other match, host nation Scotland overturned a 3-2 foursomes deficit against Wales with a rousing singles display to claim a 9.5-5.5 and finish in the runners-up spot with two wins from three.

England had to settle for third place with one victory while Wales picked up the wooden spoon for the second successive season.
