Mexico's world number one Lorena Ochoa claimed her first major title with a final round 74 at the Women's British Open.

The 25-year-old from Guadalajara, who had led from round one, finished on five under par, four shots ahead of Sweden's Maria Hjorth and South Korea's Lee Jee-Young. They both shot 71 to share second place.

Ochoa, who replaced Swede Annika Sorenstam as the number one in May, has also won 12 regular LPGA titles, including three this year.

With the wild winds of the third round replaced by calmer conditions and the odd shower of rain, Ochoa, who started the day six shots ahead, never looked like losing her lead.

She had three birdies in the first nine holes and dropped four shots, three on the back nine.

The only minor hiccup was at the par-five 17th where Ochoa hit her second into an almost unplayable lie in a fairways bunker and had to hit out sideways. However, she salvaged a bogey six.

Ochoa said: 'It's unbelievable to win my first major and do it at St Andrews.

'I have so many family and friends here. It is just fantastic. I wasn't too nervous today. I just went out and tried to play my own game and take it hole by hole. But to win at the Home of Golf is fantastic.'
