Rory McIlroy has jumped to the top of the amateur world rankings following his impressive display at the Dubai Desert Classic last weekend.

The Holywood golfer started brightly at the Emirates Golf Club in Dubai and made the cut on six-under-par before falling away over the final two rounds to finish on three-under 285.

The 17-year-old now moves up from third place in the rankings list which is only in its sixth week.

Speaking to the Irish Independent, McIlroy said: 'I'm only leading by a small amount but I'd love to be able to stay there until I turn professional.

'It's a great feeling to be number one and it gives me extra motivation.'

The current European Amateur champion added: 'There are so many amateur tournaments it's going to be really hard to stay on top.'

Last year, McIlroy became the first player since Joe Carr to retain both the West of Ireland and Irish Close titles.
