Jim Furyk birdied the final two holes to complete a five-under-par 67 and take a one-shot lead after the first round of the Grand Slam of Golf.

Furyk trailed US Open champion Geoff Ogilvy by one shot before draining birdies of 10 feet at number 17 and nine feet at number 18 on the oceanside Poipu Bay Golf Course.

Ogilvy took the lead with a birdie at the fifth hole. He birdied the ensuing hole and maintained the lead until Furyk's finish.

Tiger Woods, who won the British Open and PGA Championship, was spraying drives all day but birdied the final hole to finish at 70, one shot better than Canadian Mike Weir.

This is an unofficial 36-hole event that has been dominated by Woods, who has won it six of the eight times it has been held, including last year. Furyk won his only previous appearance here in 2003.

The event is supposed to feature the winners of this year's majors. But Masters champion and 2004 winner Phil Mickelson decided not to participate and was replaced by Weir.

With Woods winning two of the majors, Furyk was given a berth for finishing second on the PGA Tour money list.

Last year, Woods fired a 13-under 131 to easily beat Mickelson, Michael Campbell and Vijay Singh.
