Britain and Ireland produced a couple of Houdini acts to keep alive their hopes of a shock success in the 34th Curtis Cup match against the United States in Oregon tonight.
Having trailed 7-2 overnight, the British team knew that if they surrendered a further two points in the foursomes America would retain the trophy.
But it was a very different story from yesterday as the British captured the session two-and-a-half to a-half to go into the final singles trailing seven-and-a-half to four-and-a-half.
Welsh international Breanne Loucks and English girls champion Melissa Reid, from Chevin, gave the Brits an early boost when they romped to a seven and five victory over Jennie Lee and Jenny Suh.
Level after three holes they won six of the next nine to go dormie and wrapped up the match with a regulation four at the 13th and were two over par at the finish.
Limerick's Tricia Mangan, the 32-year-old Irish champion, and Carlow's Tara Delaney were two down early on to Jane Park and Taylor Leon but battled hard to go in front at the 14th only to lose the next two holes.
But to their credit they stuck to their guns and a par five at the last was sufficient for them to win the hole and halve the match.
Dublin's Martina Gillen and Yorkshire's Naomi Edwards produced a remarkable result against the impressive Paige McKenzie and Amanda Blumenherst.
One down most of the way they squared at the 16th and went in front for the first time at the short 17th. A half at the next gave them a vital point which kept alive the British team's slim hopes.
Going into the six singles the Americans needed one-and-a-half points to retain the trophy.
