Britain and Ireland trail in Curtis Cup

Britain and Ireland are facing an uphill battle in the Curtis Cup in Oregon after Saturday's opening day of play against the United States.

The Britain and Ireland team are trailing their American counterparts 7-2 after the opening series of games which involved foursomes and singles at the Bandon Dunes Golf Resort.

In the morning foursomes, Irish titleholder Tricia Mangan, the 32-year-old Limerick prison officer, and English titleholder Kiran Matharu, the youngest member of the side, lost by five and four.

Dubliner Martina Gillen, a Curtis Cup reserve four years ago, and England's Naomi Edwards, the reigning Welsh Open stroke play champion, started well but lost by two holes.

Cork's Claire Coughlan and English girls' champion Melissa Reid went down on the home green to Jane Park and Taylor Leon.

In the afternoon singles, Gillen, Coughlan and Carlow's Tara Delaney all played but were all beaten.

Today's matches once again see foursomes and singles with the American team needing just two points to retain the cup.
