Colin Montgomerie admits conditions at a sun-baked Hoylake will suit his game as he looks to bury the memory of his US Open nightmare a month ago.
If Jean Van de Velde's 72nd hole at Carnoustie in 1999 is the most famous triple bogey in the history of the sport then the sixes Montgomerie and Phil Mickelson made at Winged Foot remain the most talked-about double bogeys in golf today.
And the timing could be perfect for Montgomerie to make up for missing out on his first major title at the Open championship this week on a course with hard and fast conditions which mean it is playing nowhere near its yardage of 7,258.
'Yes, I feel it might suit me,' admitted Montgomerie.
'I tend to keep the ball fairly straight and that's key around here.
'Length I don't think is an issue. Although it's over 7,200 yards on the card, it must be playing about 5,500 in real terms.
'I'm confident, I'm playing well and I know where the ball is going - that's half the battle. I look forward to this week, I really do.'
