Defending champion Rory McIlroy is through to the last 16 of the West of Ireland Championship at Rosses Point.

The Holywood player beat Ballyliffin's Shaun Doherty by 2 and 1 in the second round and will meet Thomas O'Neill of Rathsallagh, a surprise winner over Mark Campbell, in the last 16 today.

The 16-year-old booked his place in the second round with 20th hole victory over Scrabo's Ryan Boal in a thrilling encounter.

McIlroy was three up after nine holes, lost the next three holes and the 15th to go one down but then squared the match at the 17th.

He was then forced to hole a ten-footer for birdie at the 18th to keep the match alive before finally coming through with a birdie from three feet at the 20th.

England's David Horsey, leading qualifier Paul O'Hanlon and Irish internationals Seamus Power and Darren Crowe also progressed to the third round.
