World number one Tiger Woods posted the most lopsided victory in the history of the Accenture Match Play Championship on Wednesday, a 9 and 8 rout of Stephen Ames.

Woods, motivated by an injudicious pre-tournament remark by his opponent, won every hole on the front nine before halving the 10th to complete the first-round triumph.

The previous record margin of victory in the World Golf Championships event was 7 and 6.

Most of the other top seeds advanced, including Fiji's Vijay Singh, South African Retief Goosen and Phil Mickelson.

Singh beat Ireland's Graeme McDowell, while other Irish casualties included Paul McGinley and Darren Clarke.

Padraig Harrington recorded the only Irish victory beating Rod Pampling.

South Africa's Ernie Els was the biggest casualty, beaten by Germany's Bernhard Langer 1 up.

Phil Mickelson had to work before emerging with a 2-up victory over Charles Howell.

Next up for Mickelson is John Daly, who beat Bart Bryant 4 and 2.

In an earlier match, Tom Lehman didn't drop a shot as he outlasted Stuart Appleby 3 and 2.

Lehman's second-round opponent will be another Australian, Adam Scott, who recovered from a woeful start to beat Lucas Glover 2 and 1.

Scott bogeyed the first two holes but won three holes in a row starting at the sixth to take the lead in a match that never rose to great heights.

US Open champion Michael Campbell of New Zealand was eliminated on the first extra hole by Geoff Ogilvy.

Ogilvy rallied by sinking a six-foot putt on the 18th hole to square the match, then chipped in on the first extra hole to send Campbell packing.

A record seven matches went to extra holes, the longest stretching for 26 holes before Scott Verplank outlasted England's Lee Westwood.
