Defending champion Tiger Woods moved into a one-shot lead over compatriot Jim Furyk in the third round of the Dunlop Phoenix tournament in Japan.

The world number one carded a two-under-par round of 68 for a 10-under total, overhauling the lead of Furyk, who shot 70.

Woods had birdies at the third and fourth to move to 10 under but gave both those back with bogeys at the seventh and ninth.

He reproduced back-to-back birdies at the 12th and 13th, two par fours, and although Woods dropped a shot at the 15th he reclaimed it with a birdie at the par-five last.

Furyk opened and closed his front nine with birdies but dropped a shot on the par-four eighth to turn in 34.

He dropped further shots at the 12th and short 17th but he too finished with a birdie to stand nine under at the Phoenix Country Club in Miyazaki.

Just two shots further back is fellow American and former world number one David Duval, whose one-over-par round of 71 dropped him back into a tie for third.

Scotland's Colin Montgomerie, who started the day level par, fared even worse with a seven-over 77 which left him tied for 48th.

The eight-time Order of Merit winner had six bogeys and a double-bogey five after three-putting the 16th with his solitary birdie coming at the par-four seventh.
