A confident Phil Mickelson put himself firmly in control of the 87th PGA Championship when he fired a sizzling five-under 65 second on Friday.
It put the 35-year-old three clear of his nearest rival, fellow American Jerry Kelly, who also shot a 65 in the afternoon.
Mickelson was four shots clear of American Davis Love, England's Lee Westwood and South Africa's Rory Sabbatini.
A host of players including defending champion Vijay Singh of Fiji and Sweden's Jesper Parnevik were another shot back.
World number one Tiger Woods had to wait until the final hole before booking his place for the weekend and keeping his record of never missing the cut in a Major as a professional intact.
Paul McGinley, on two-over-par, was the only Irish player to make the cut.
