Monster putt earns Harrington US title

Dublin’s Padraig Harrington landed a 60ft eagle putt on the final hole to claim the Barclays Classic in New York.

Harrington and America's Jim Furyk began the par-five 18th level on eight under for the tournament.

Furyk played a conventional route of two drives, a chip and a putt for birdie, but Harrington eclipsed that by getting on the green in two and then firing in his monster putt.

“I can't believe that,” said Harrington. “Obviously, I feel sorry for Jim, but I kept in there all day and just got the breaks at the end.”

Harrington, who earlier this season posted his first PGA Tour victory at the Honda Classic, lost to Sergio Garcia in a three-way play-off here last year.

“Funny enough this putt broke, last year my putt stayed straight,” added Harrington. "This one broke and did everything it should have. It's sweet redemption for last year."

Harrington and Furyk began the final round level at the head of the leaderboard on nine under, but for much of the day it seemed like the American would pull clear.

A bogey at the second and a double bogey at the third saw Harrington slip back to six under while Furyk recovered from a bogey at the first to birdie the third and move three shots clear.

Harrington hit back with a birdie at the seventh and an eagle at the ninth, but successive bogeys at 11 and 12 again handed the initiative to Furyk.

The American had birdied the ninth and was still three ahead of his playing partner on the 14 tee.

However, Harrington birdied that hole and Furyk came back to him with bogeys on the 16th and 17th to set up the grandstand finish.

Brian Gay, Kenny Perry and Brad Faxon finished tied for third on five under, five shots adrift of Harrington.
