Jim Furyk, who is seeking his first victory since 2003, leads by one shot after the second round of the Barclays Classic in New York.

Furyk carded a two-under-par 69 to reach halfway on eight under at 134 – one shot ahead of Brian Gay.

Furyk birdied five of his final nine holes in the first round to finish on six under at the Westchester Country Club.

In the second round he started on the 10th and made the turn at even par after a birdie and a bogey but an eagle on the par-four eighth helped him maintain the lead.

"It's a good feeling to go out and play a solid round, hit a lot of fairways and hit a lot of greens," Furyk said. "I really didn't get into trouble a lot today."

John Senden, Kenny Perry, Padraig Harrington, Len Mattiace and Hidemichi Tanaka of Japan share third place on six under at 136 - two strokes behind the leader.

Harrington and Mattiace moved up the leaderboard with rounds of 65.

Harrington, who earlier this season posted his first PGA Tour victory at the Honda Classic, had five birdies and an eagle at the par-five 18th against just one bogey.

Vijay Singh, who won here in 1993 and 1995, shot a 71 and ended the day tied for ninth at three under.

Sergio Garcia, the defending champion, finished with four consecutive bogeys on the first day to post a one-over 72 and was two-over after his first nine on day two.

However, two birdies on the back nine gave the Spaniard an even-par 71.

"I just couldn't make any putts and that was pretty much the end of the story," Garcia said. "I think one over is fine. The good thing is the way the course is playing and if it doesn't rain, it's just going to be tough. I feel like I'm playing well, it's just a matter of rolling a couple of putts in."
