16-year-old Rory McIlroy became the youngest ever winner of the Irish Amateur Close Championship when he defeated Eddie McCormack by three and two in today's final at Westport Golf Club.

Earlier in this morning's semi-final, the youngster, from Holywood in Co Down, beat Connor Doran of Banbridge by 4 and 3.

Galway's McCormack had ousted Portmarnock's Aengus McAllister by 3 and 2 in the last four encounter.

It was McIlroy's second major win of the year following his victory at the West of Ireland Championship.
