Joe Ogilvie took control on the first day of the Bob Hope Classic as an eagle on his final hole helped him to the top of the leaderboard with an impressive nine-under 63.
Ogilvie, who shared the overnight lead with four other players, had eight birdies and a single bogey to go along with his eagle on the par five 18th at the Bermuda Dunes Country Club, one of the four courses used for the five day event.
It was the third eagle in two days for Ogilvie to leave him at 17-under through 36 holes and a massive four shots clear of Billy Mayfair.
Mayfair was almost as impressive as the leader and his eight-under 64 at the Bermuda Dunes included 10 birdies, a double bogey on the par five 13th the only blemish on a sparkling round.
Lurking one shot further back at 12-under is a pack of eight golfers that includes overnight leaders Ted Purdy and Robert Darmon and defending champion Phil Mickelson.
Mickelson, who won here for a second time last year in a playoff to break an 18-month title drought then went on to win the US Masters, was enjoying a bogey free round going six-under at the La Quinta Country Club with five to play.
