David Howell has won the Royal Bank of Scotland "shot of the year award" for a remarkable tee shot on the par three 17th at Oakland Hills on the second day of the Ryder Cup in September.
Howell and fellow Englishman Paul Casey were one down with two to play against Chad Campbell and Jim Furyk after 16 holes of their morning fourball match. Howell struck a six iron to five feet and rolled in the putt for a birdie to square the match, which the European pair then won on the 18th.
That victory stemmed the tide of an American fightback and was, to most observers, the most significant point in the Europe's historic triumph.
