Irish victory sets up Begium clash

The Irish Youths team have set up an encounter with Belgium after seeing off the Netherlands by 3 matches to 2 at the European Youths Team Championship on Friday at the Island Golf Club.

In the foursomes match, Curragh member Paul O'Hanlon and Cathal O'Malley from Westport ran out comfortable winners 3/2 against Richard Kind and Alister Munro. Tramore's Clancy Bowe was 4up on Robert Niemer after nine holes and saw off the
Dutchman on the 16th green, winning 3/2.

Holywood's Harry Diamond left it late, claiming victory on the 17th green by a 3/1 margin. In the other matches Stephen Crowe lost 4/3 to Sven Maurits and Niall Turner lost to Wil Besseling.

The victory guarantees Ireland a top ten finish and the match against Belgium gets underway on Saturday morning.

In the semi-finals, England accounted for Germany 4.5 matches to 2.5 while Scotland beat Spain in a close encounter by 4 matches to 3. The shot of the day came from England's Matthew Richardson in the morning's foursomes where he had a hole in one at the par three ninth.

The final will see England take on Spain with the foursomes at 8am and the singles at 1.15pm.
