Irish youths start well in Dublin

Ireland has made a very positive start on Day One of European Youths Team Championship at The Island Golf Club in Dublin but still have some work to do to ensure top flight qualification.

Stephen Crowe from Dunmurry Golf Club took advantage of an early start, posting a round of 70, one under for the day.

Niall Turner of Muskerry GC had a 2 over round of 73 while Harry Diamond of Holywood had a mixed day, finishing nine over par with a round of 80. The Curragh's Paul O Hanlon, reigning Leinster Boys Champion, carded a five over par 76.

Up and coming youngster Cathal O'Malley from Westport, claimed an encouraging opening round of 75 while Tramore s Clancy Bowe, one of the more experienced members of the team carded a seven-over-par round of 78.

These scores leave Ireland in 9th position going into the second day of qualifying.

Teams in the top eight after tomorrow will battle it out against each other in the top flight for the title European Youths Team Champions 2004 while the other teams will compete in flights two and three.
