There were several surprises on the first day of matchplay clashes in the Irish Close Championship at the Donegal Golf Club in Murvagh.
In the second round, West Waterford's Mark Shanahan shocked defending champion Mark O'Sullivan by one hole and Seamus McMonagle beat international Mervyn Owens from Mallow by 6 and 5.
There was also a shock second round defeat for Order of Merit leader Sean McTernan who lost by 2 and 1 to Robert McCarthy of the Island.
However, internationals Noel Fox, Gareth Maybin, Mark Campbell, Darren Crowe, Michael McGeady, Brian McElhinney, Michael Sinclair and 2002 champion John McGinn all made it safely through.
