Joe Carr, one of Ireland's best ever amateur golfers, has died at the age of 82.
Joe was the first Irishman to captain the Royal and Ancient Club of St Andrews in 1991/92, made ten Walker Cup appearances, in addition to being captain of the team on two occasions, and won three British Amateur titles.
He also competed in the Masters at Augusta three times, making the cut twice. In all, he won 40 major championships during his illustrious 20-year amateur career.
When his playing career ended, Joe turned his talents to the administration side of the game, and played major roles as captain in the successes of Irish teams.
The Golfing Union of Ireland, whom Joe was a trustee of at the time of his death, today said in a statement that they would "be forever be indebted" to Joe "for his massive contribution to amateur golf - as a player, team captain, administrator and international ambassador."
