Gary Wolstenholme's attempt to become the first player since 1978 to make a successful defence of the British Amateur Championship ended at St Andrews today. The 43-year-old lost 3 & 2 to German Patrick Niederdrenk in the third round.
Ireland's Gareth Maybin beat Australian Michael Sim 2 & 1 despite an extraordinary incident on the 13th tee.
As he was preparing to tee-off, Maybin was hit on the head by a ball after a lady on an adjoining course shanked her shot. Luckily two Irish doctors were following the game and checked him over and he was fine to continue. The lady in question, meanwhile, came over and apologised.
Maybin lost his next match, though, beaten 5 and 4 to England's Lee Corfield.
