Woods wins US PGA player award

World number one Tiger Woods, who did not win a major or the money title for the first time since 1998, has been voted the US PGA Tour Player of the Year for the fifth year in a row.

Woods beat Vijay Singh of Fiji in voting by their peers. The 27-year-old Woods led the tour with five victories and captured the Vardon Trophy with a tour-best 68.41 scoring average.

Singh, 40, won four times and captured the money title with $7.5 million, $900,000 more than runner-up Woods, dethroned after four years in a row as the annual money king.

British Open champion Ben Curtis captured US PGA Rookie of the Year honors and Peter Jacobsen was selected US PGA Comeback Player of the Year.

Woods was the first man to win Player of the Year honors without capturing a major since Australia's Greg Norman in 1995.

"I think everyone is basing my performances on 2000, which was a very magical year and very hard to duplicate," Woods said. "This year was disappointing from a major standpoint but I won five times on tour including two World Golf titles."
