Garth McGimpsey has been re-appointed as Walker Cup captain following Britain and Ireland's third successive win in the contest last month. The Bangor man led the home side to victory over the United States at Ganton and will captain the team when they defend the trophy at Chicago Golf Club in August 2005.
The 48-year-old former amateur champion has been put in charge of Britain and Ireland's men's teams for the next two years - including the St Andrews Trophy match against the Continent of Europe at Nairn Golf Club in August next year.
He played for Ireland in the Home Internationals between 1978 and 1999 and contributed towards Ireland winning the European Amateur Team Championships both in 1983 and 1987. McGimpsey has a sports good distribution business in Bangor and lives there with his wife Gillian and their three children, Jamie, Hannah and Jack. He is a member of Bangor, Royal Portrush and Royal County Down Golf Clubs.
