Waterville's Mark Murphy has qualified for the US Amateur Championship, becoming the first Irishman to take part in the event since 1989. The Kerryman was a medallist at Kirkbrae County Club in Rhode Island after rounds of 74 and 67 yesterday.
The event, won last year by Ricky Barnes, takes place in a fortnight's time at Oakmont County Club in Pennsylvania, the venue for the 1995 Ryder Cup.
