Ireland excel in Holland

Ireland has topped the qualifying section of the European Golf Team Championships at The Royal Hague Golf Club in Holland. The six-man team, captained by Mark Gannon, finished day two on 716 strokes, well clear of second place Norway on 727 with hosts Holland on 729.

On Tuesday in round one, Justin Kehoe led the way with a course record equalling round of 66, the best of his career. He followed it up today with a one over par 73.

The youngest member of the team, Brian McElhinney carded rounds of 69 and 73 while Noel Fox, the current Irish Amateur Open Champion and Walker Cup hopeful, signed for rounds of 69 and 74 amidst tough weather conditions.

The other Walker Cup panellists, Colm Moriarty and Gareth Maybin, were both consistent with Moriarty shooting 72 and 75, while Maybin, current North of Ireland champion, carded a 73 and a 72. City of Derry golfer Michael McGeady found conditions a little too tough, and his scores of 79 and 81 were discounted in the aggregate total.
