Harrington plans to bore his way to US Open win

Ireland’s Padraig Harrington set out the key to winning the US Open golf championship this week - be boring. "The courses we play in Europe definitely require more flair, and that's the last thing you want in a US Open course," declared the Dubliner.

"You want to be the most boring golfer around this week," added Harrington, the only European ranked in the world's top ten. "A US Open is the one that really tests your ability to hit it straight, hit it on the green and two-putt."

And the 31-year-old said he was looking forward to the challenge of being 'bore of the week'. "I enjoy the US Open because it's different. I say unimaginative, yes, but it's an exceptionally hard test. It definitely requires more discipline that any other tournament. In other tournaments your strategy can be made up as it goes along. A US Open you have to set your game plan at the start of the week, start of every round, and stick to it religiously.

"It's great to see if you can do that for four days. It's great to see if you can stay focused and disciplined and not make mental errors over four days. I look forward to it," said Harrington. "I think it's something that suits me."

Last year Harrington finished eighth in the US Open and in 2000 was fifth and warned he was ready to make his breakthough and win his first Major. "I need a lot of things to go right for me to be a winner this week. If I get the chance I'm ready," he said.
