Victory for Perry in Colonial event

Kenny Perry claimed a comfortable six-shot victory at the Bank of America Colonial in Fort Worth, Texas.

The 42-year-old American closed with a two-under-par 68 for a competition record 19-under-par total of 261 to claim what was his fifth PGA Tour title and a cheque for $900,000.

Justin Leonard, who had been on course for a record breaking round of 59 before a bogey at the final hole, tied the course record of 61 jointly held by Perry, Greg Kraft, Keith Clearwater and Lee Janzen, however ever that final round was only enough to earn him second place on 267. Jeff Sluman was a shot further back on 268, with Brandt Jobe in fourth place on 269.

The victorious Perry was jubilant following his victory. "That's always really been important for me to get five," he said. "I can't say enough for how I felt this week. I was very calm, very relaxed. I tried to play smart, I tried to just put the ball in the middle of the green."

Despite his triumph, Perry had to play second fiddle to Annika Sorenstam in terms of publicity, but he was philosophical about the coverage the world's leading female golfer had received. "I'll probably be remembered as the guy who won Annika's event," he joked.

"I'm not a superstar. I'm just a good, solid golfer. I play good golf. I work hard at what I do. To get that win, and keep doing it, at my age, it really makes me feel good."
