Davis Love III took victory at The Heritage in South Carolina, with a birdie on the fourth extra hole of a play-off with Woody Austin. Both finished on 13 under 271 for the tournament after Love closed with a four-under-par 67 and Austin carded a 68.
David Gossett, Geoff Ogilvy, Chris Riley and Hal Sutton were all tied for third after finishing on 12 under.
World number four Love also won here in 1998, 1992, 1991 and 1987. He is the only player in the 35-year history of the event to win it more than three times.
Austin twice threw away chances to claim his second career title, lipping out a 5ft birdie putt on the second sudden-death hole and a three-footer for par on the third - both of which would have given him the victory.
