Colm Moriarty of Athlone virtually sealed his place on this year's Walker Cup team with an historic win in Australia. Having captured the New South Wales Strokeplay Championship title on Monday last, the Irish international today defeated James Nitties of Australia 6 & 5 in the final of the prestigious New South Wales Amateur Championship.
Moriarty, a +4 handicapper, is the first international player to capture this title since New Zealand's Michael Campbell back in the late 80s.
Birr's Justin Kehoe had reached the semi-finals of the tournament but was sadly beaten by Nitties on Saturday to deny spectators an all-Ireland final.
