Top Irish amateurs receive Sports Council grants

The Irish Sports Council has donated €63,500 to Ireland's leading amateur golfers.

Athlone's Colm Moriarty is the top recipient with a grant of €6,000. Moriarty, winner of the South of Ireland Championship and the Willie Gill, was also a member of Ireland's three-man team in the World Amateur Team Championship in Kuala Lumpur and finished runner-up in the Brabazon Trophy.

Ireland's other two World Cup team members, Noel Fox (Portmarnock), winner of the East of Ireland Championship, and Justin Kehoe (Birr), winner of the World Universities Championship in Taiwan, were both awarded amounts of €4,500.

A total of 44 players received grants, which were awarded based on specific criteria agreed by the Sports Council and the Golfing Union of Ireland.

It was also announced today that Moriarty and Kehoe have been selected by the GUI to compete in the Lake Macquarie Amateur Championship and the NSW Medal and Amateur Championship in Australia early in the New Year. The Lake Macquarie Amateur 72 holes Stroke Play Championship will be played at the Belmont Golf Club on 24th to 27th January, followed by the NSW 72 hole Medal and Amateur Championship at the Lakes Golf Club on 5th to 9th February. Both events are in Sydney.

Meanwhile, Michael McDermott (Stackstown) and Robert McCarthy (The Island), will travel to Argentina in early December to compete in the Juan Carlos Tailhade Championship and the 7th International Team Tournament at the Los Lagartos Country Club, near Buenos Aires.
