American Ryder Cup captain Curtis Strange has sought assurance that European captain Sam Torrance will not be allowed to move the 10th tee forward once the Ryder Cup begins on Friday. As home captain, Torrance determines the set-up of the course and he has decided to play one of The Belfry's most famous holes from the back tee.
At 311 yards now it is generally agreed that it is far too risky a shot to go for the carry to the green over water. Torrance was asked today if there was any chance he could change his mind and his reply of "unless it's requested by my players but I don't think it's going to be" alarmed Strange, who had just been told by chief referee John Paramor that the tee would not be altered.
"If it is going to change I want my players to practise it. Don't you think that's fair," said a concerned Strange. This is the latest rumble to hit the preparations for this weekend's tournament after the American's complained of slow play from the Europeans during yesterday's practice session.
