Ernie Els has won the Asprey Golfer of the Month award for July following his victory in the Open championship at Muirfield. Els, who wins a £1,000 charity donation to the Golf Foundation, beat France's Thomas Levet at the first extra hole of a sudden-death play-off after Australians Steve Elkington and Stuart Appleby had been eliminated following the initial four hole play-off.
The South African becomes the second golfer this season to win two monthly awards after also claiming the prize following his victory in the Dubai Desert Classic in March. Justin Rose won in January and May and the other winners so far this year have been Jose Maria Olazabal (February), Retief Goosen (April) and Miles Tunnicliff (June).
